Is a slipped disc and a disc bulge the same thing?
Yes, a disc bulge and a slipped disc mean exactly the same thing.
Is a disc bulge and a disc herniation the same thing?
No, while they are both injuries to the disc, a herniation is more severe.
Will a disc bulge heal on its own?
While it is possible to have symptoms improve, typically intervention is needed. Most of the time pain relief can be felt in just a few visits.
Are herniated discs painful?
Typically very painful with both lower back pain and pain down the leg.
Can a slipped disc cause sciatica?
Yes, a disc injury can put pressure on a nerve which will cause pain down your leg.
Where are the most common places for disc injuries
C5-6, C6-7 (neck), L4-5, L5-S1 (low back): these are the most common disc spaces due to the stress put on the spine during frequent postures
Do I need surgery for a bulging disc or slipped disc?
No. Nearly all disc bulges are non surgical cases. They can be fixed with chiropractic treatment and physical therapy. Surgery may be necessary for extreme cases of disc herniations that cause persistent weakness that does not respond to 6-8 weeks of conservative therapy.
Does a disc bulge cause sciatica?
Yes, a disc can push on the nerve at that level causing sciatica or radiation of pain into the leg.
Do I need an MRI to see if I have a slipped disc?
Generally we can perform orthopedic tests in the office to determine if you have a disc problem. If deemed necessary, an MRI can be performed to confirm the presence of a disc injury.
Is there a home remedy or exercises I can do at home to fix a slipped disc?
The best exercises for your condition depend on what level the disc is located. In general, performing core stabilization and glute activation exercises can help to stabilize the lower back.
